There is such a thing as dirt cheap Ecuador and bananas is one of them, along with many other fruits and vegetables; however buying your produce at the Mercado could invite culture shock if you're not used to odors and rotten fish smells, being brushed up against by strangers, pushing and shoving crowds, being watchful for pick-pockets, staring because "you're a gringo shopping where poor people shop or getting gringo gouged.
